What is a transparent PNG, and when should you use one?

September 24, 2026

When you remove a background, you are left with a subject floating on nothing. That "nothing" is called transparency, and it is stored in the image file itself.

How transparency works

A normal image stores a color for every pixel. Formats that support transparency store one more value per pixel, called alpha, which says how see-through that pixel is. Fully transparent pixels show whatever is behind the image. Partly transparent pixels create soft, natural edges.

Why JPG cannot do it

JPG has no alpha channel, so it always has a solid background, usually white. If you want to keep transparency, save as PNG or WebP. ClearCut exports PNG, which is supported almost everywhere. Our format comparison goes deeper.

Where transparent PNGs help

  • Logos that need to sit on light and dark pages.
  • Product photos you want to place on your own background or in a design.
  • Presentations, so the subject blends into your slide instead of sitting in a white box.
  • Stickers and cutouts for chats, videos, and social posts.

Check it on different backgrounds

A cutout can look fine on white and reveal a light halo on black. Use the background swatches in ClearCut to preview on white, black, and a color before you download. If you see a fringe, raise Shrink edge by a step or two.
